Cleaning | Density measurement of cleaning agents and disinfectants

Inconsistent cleaning agent and disinfectant concentrations can compromise performance, labeling compliance, and consumer safety. Portable density meters enable fast, reliable on-site concentration verification, impurity detection, and efficient quality control.

Consumer safety requires cleaning and disinfection in many fields of application that are subject to contamination, such as production equipment, floors, instruments, hands, and many more. Liquid cleaning agents come in various compositions, including water-based and alcohol-based products, among them.

Water-based products contain acids, bases, aldehydes, sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or other per-compounds. They are often shipped in concentrated form and have to be diluted to concentrations of 1 % up to 10 % before use.

Alcohol-based products consist of alcohol/water mixtures in various concentrations, or mixtures of alcohols, mainly n-propyl alcohol (propan-1-ol or 1-propanol), isopropyl alcohol (IPA; propan-2-ol or 2-propanol), and ethanol. Some of these products also contain an active ingredient like a quaternary ammonium compound in concentrations below 1 %.

Density measurements offer an easy and reliable way to determine concentration or detect formulation deviations. Even small changes in composition or dilution affect the density, allowing rapid identification of mixing errors or improper storage conditions. It also enables the determination of the correct label volume by converting weight-based filling results into volume-based declarations, ensuring compliance with product labeling requirements.
