Particle Characterization by Size and Morphology – Baden

Formation de base

In this course, participants will learn about the theory of light scattering and the relevance of size and morphology in particle characterization. The principles of laser diffraction and image analysis will be covered, as well as understanding the pros and cons between the two techniques and advantages of choosing one over the other. In the afternoon, participants will have hands-on experience with both instruments, the Litesizer DIF (laser diffraction) and the Litesizer DIA series (dynamic image analysis). After these experiments, data interpretation and analysis will be discussed in small groups. 

Requirements:

Ideally suited for professionals active in material sciences, particle formulation and processing.

Dr. David Burnand, Elisa Gianfreda, Dr. Leonard Krupnik (Langues: English)

Groupe cible: Scientists who wants to learn more about the possibilities of Anton Paar’s size distribution equipment, already owns a particle size instrument or wants to deepen their knowledge about new technologies on the market.
Conditions préalables: Candidates should ideally have a basic knowledge of material characterization and experience with particle size analyzers.

Dr. David Burnand

David Burnand, born in 1985 in Lausanne, studied chemical engineering at HEIA-FR in Fribourg. After completing his Master of Science in Chemistry, he earned his PhD in colloidal chemistry from the Adolphe Merkle Institute in 2018, focusing on the design and characterization of polymer-coated nanoparticles for biomedical applications. Building on his strong expertise in nanomaterials, David has been working since 2022 as an Application Specialist for material characterization and rheology at Anton Paar Switzerland.

Elisa Gianfreda

Elisa Gianfreda, born in 1997 in Biel, holds a Master’s degree in Life Sciences (Chemistry) from FHNW Muttenz. Her work has focused on analytical chemistry and materials characterization in the context of polymer and biopolymer systems, combining advanced analytical and materials testing approaches. She joined Anton Paar Switzerland in February 2025 as a Product Specialist for Particle and Material Characterization.

Dr. Leonard Krupnik

Leonard Krupnik, born in 1994 in Berlin, earned a Master’s degree in Chemistry from Heidelberg University and completed his PhD in Chemistry at the University of Fribourg and EMPA, specializing in nanomedicines and the characterization of iron nanoparticle–based anemia treatments using scattering techniques. Building on his expertise in nanoparticles and X-ray scattering–based characterization, he has been working since June 2025 as a Product Specialist for Material Characterization at Anton Paar Switzerland.
