Temperature-Dependent Rheological Behavior of Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives

Introduction

Due to their wide range of applications, pressuresensitive adhesives (PSAs) are an important segment in the adhesives market.

Their thermal and mechanical behavior depends strongly on how the adhesive is used. As a consequence, the viscosity of the melt, the viscoelastic properties and the shear resistance of the sample at ambient temperature are all of importance. For example, the adhesive film of a diaper should be tacky enough from room temperature to body temperature in order to withstand the shear applied during any movement of the baby.

With regards to the production of PSAs, their melting temperature should not be too high, in order to avoid any thermal degradation or destruction of the substrate, and to reduce their energy consumption during application. Control over the viscous and elastic properties of the melt is essential for the wetting behavior of the substrate and the maximum speed of application.
