This seminar offers an in-depth introduction to FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) and Raman spectroscopy, covering their basic principles, benefits, and limitations. These two molecular characterization methods are widely used in various scientific and industrial fields, allow for the analysis of the chemical composition, structure, and material properties.

The seminar is aimed at researchers, engineers, and students interested in spectroscopic analysis methods and offers practical knowledge for choosing the most suitable method for their analysis needs. Real-world case studies will illustrate applications across chemistry, biology, materials science, and the pharmaceutical industry.

  • The principles of FTIR and Raman spectroscopy: Understanding the theoretical basis of each technique, the underlying physical phenomena, and how information is extracted from the resulting spectra.
  • Advantages of each method: Comparison of the strengths of the two techniques, such as ease of use, speed of analysis, absence of sample preparation for certain applications, and the level of molecular detail they can reveal.
  • Limitations and challenges: Discussion of the constraints associated with each technique, such as sensitivity to certain experimental conditions, spectral interference, or limitations in the analysis of certain types of material.
  • Joint applications: The seminar will also cover innovative applications that combine Raman spectroscopy with other analytical techniques. These include the integration of rheology with Raman to understand viscoelastic properties and material dynamics in real time, and the use of microwave synthesis coupled with Raman spectroscopy to optimize chemical and manufacturing processes.

Nicolas Ogez-Paul

Nicolas Ogez-Paul started his career as a chemist in organic chemistry research and development. After five years with a company specializing in sample preparation, synthesis and purification of organic compounds as Sales Manager for France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland, Nicolas Ogez-Paul joined Anton Paar Switzerland in 2016. Initially responsible for the sales of density, refractive index, polarimetry, viscosity, flashpoint and oxidation testers, in-line measurement for French-speaking Switzerland and mineralization and synthesis microwaves for the Western part of Switzerland, he progressed internally to his current position as Team Leader of Anton Paar Switzerland's «Measurement» division and Microwave Sales Manager for the whole of Switzerland.

Viktor Zagorec

Viktor Zagorec is the Product Manager for Raman Technology at Anton Paar, responsible for the benchtop Raman portfolio. He joined the company four years ago, initially working at Anton Paar Croatia before transitioning to the Raman team. Viktor Zagorec holds a Master’s degree in Analytical Chemistry and brings a strong scientific background to his role. In addition to his expertise in chemistry, he also has business experience and holds a Master’s degree in Management.

Daniel Vetter

Daniel Vetter was born in Salzburg, Austria and moved to Graz, Austria to study chemistry. He holds a Master’s degree in technical chemistry from the Technical University of Graz, which included a six-month exchange semester in the USA. He has been working as FTIR Product Manager at Anton Paar since 2022.
