Identification of Explosives using a Handheld Raman Spectrometer

A Raman spectrometer easily identifies different explosives by their unique chemical fingerprint

Introduction

According to the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) the illegal use of improvised explosive devices (IED) is spreading fast and poses a major safety issue for civilians as well as humanitarian personnel, police, UN staff, and peacekeepers. The simple designs in combination with favorable and easily accessible components of IEDs as well as the growing sophistication of terrorist groups to adapt to counter-IED measures are the main reasons for this fast-growing threat.

The authorities, which enforce counter-IED measures and aim to prevent IED-related crimes, require fast and safe methods for the rapid identification of presumably illegal substances in the field. Small handheld devices using non-contact and non-destructive measurement techniques such as the Cora 100 analyzer are ideally suited for this application.
