Aviation | Viscosity of Aviation Lube Oils and Hydraulic Fluids

Depending on their application, both aviation lube oils and hydraulic fluids need to be viscosity-tested at various temperatures. Reliable and ASTM-compliant viscosity testing with SVM 3001 helps you to ensure safe aircraft operation at any temperature.

Operating an aircraft not only requires fuel, but also many different oils and hydraulic fluids. Same as for road vehicles aviation lubricants must reduce wear, keep a load-carrying lubricating film and remove heat from components.

Hydraulic fluids must reliably transfer liquid pressure within the system. They must not trap gas, which would change the compressibility of the fluid. Key features are low compressibility, high heat transfer capacity, lubrication of system components and accurate response also at low temperatures.

Further requirements for both materials are low temperature sensitivity of viscosity, thermal and chemical stability, a low pour point, providing protection against corrosion, low foaming tendency and compatibility with system components.

Due to their wide field of use in various aircraft constructions, aviation lubricants and hydraulic fluids with different chemical bases and properties are available: Mineral oil / petroleum based and several synthetic liquids.
