Wax | SVM 3001 – Viscosity Testing of High Melting Waxes
Dynamic viscosity of the liquid state of high melting point waxes is crucial for many industrial applications. SVM 3001 can measure such waxes up to 135 °C and provide results even at higher temperatures by extrapolation according to ASTM D341
Waxes can basically be classified into synthetic, natural, and hybrid waxes.
Different wax types with high melting point are classified by the materials they are based on:
- Paraffin wax (special grades only)
- Microcrystalline wax
- Polyethylene and polypropylene wax
- Fischer-Tropsch wax
- Hybrid wax (a blend of different wax types)
- Carnauba wax
Due to their different properties, they are used in several industrial fields:
- Cosmetics
- Adhesives, coatings and polishes
- Rubber and plastics
- Food packaging
- Electrical insulation
- and more.
Dynamic viscosity in the entirely liquid state is important as it characterizes flow and spreading properties on a surface, mixing properties and solidification properties during industrial manufacturing.
At high temperatures, waxes show typically Newtonian flow behavior which makes them well measurable with SVM 3001.
To determine the temperature dependent flow behavior during the transition phase from entirely liquid to gel or paste status, a rheometer or rotational viscometer is required.
