Refractometric determination of ε-caprolactam concentration provides a fast and reliable laboratory method for verifying process measurements and monitoring aqueous process streams during ε-caprolactam production and Nylon-6 manufacturing.

ε-caprolactam is the monomeric building block for Nylon-6 and is produced on a multi-million-ton scale worldwide. During production and downstream processing, aqueous ε-caprolactam solutions occur in extraction, evaporation, purification, and recovery steps.

The concentration of these solutions directly influences:

  • ε-caprolactam extraction efficiency,

  • evaporation performance,

  • raw material recovery,

  • efficient monomer recovery and contribute to consistent polymer quality.

Reliable concentration data are therefore required to evaluate process performance and minimize product losses.

In many plants, inline refractometers are used for continuous monitoring. However, process instruments are typically verified against laboratory reference measurements because process conditions, impurities, and matrix effects can influence measurement stability over time. A precise and easy-to-use laboratory reference method is therefore required.

This application report describes the refractometric determination of ε -caprolactam concentration in aqueous solutions using the Abbemat refractometer as a laboratory reference for verifying process refractometers, such as Anton Paar's L-Rix process sensor.
