Medical & Science | Monitoring Alcohol Concentration in Wet Museum Specimens Using Portable Density Measurement
Maintaining the correct alcohol concentration is essential for the long-term preservation of wet specimens stored in ethanol- or IMS-based fluids. Portable density measurements provide a rapid, low-volume method for routine monitoring of large museum collections.
Natural history museums preserve invaluable biological collections for scientific research, education, and cultural heritage. Many wet specimens, including arachnids, myriapods, worms, and other invertebrates, are stored in alcohol-based preservation fluids. These collections may date back more than 150 years and, when properly maintained, can remain scientifically useful indefinitely.
Industrial Methylated Spirits (IMS) or ethanol-water mixtures with alcohol concentrations typically between 70 % and 80 % are commonly used for specimen preservation. If the alcohol concentration decreases significantly due to evaporation or poor sealing, specimens may deteriorate. Insufficient alcohol levels can promote fungal growth, bacterial activity, osmotic stress, and degradation of DNA, reducing the scientific value of the material.
Regular monitoring of alcohol concentration is therefore essential for preventive conservation and long-term collection management.
