Rheological Characterization of Polymers with Identical MFR

Relevant for: Rheology, Polymer Melts, Frequency Sweep, Melt Flow Rate (MFR), Melt Flow Index (MFI), Polyethylene, Polypropylene, Smart Melt

The Melt Flow Rate (MFR) is a standardized parameter widely used in polymer processing and quality control. However, it provides only a single data point and thus very limited insight into material behavior. To illustrate the benefits of rheological analysis over MFR tests, three polymers with identical MFR values were analyzed using frequency sweeps. These tests provide insights into the flow behavior and the viscoelastic properties of the polymers as a function of frequency and shear rate, respectively. The results reveal pronounced differences between the polymers that are not evident from the MFR but may be highly relevant for processing.
