From Burnt to Brilliant: Analyzing the Porosity of Biochar with Envelope Density

Biochars, which are produced by the pyrolysis of organic matter, are widely used in the environmental and agricultural sectors. Their porosity is a crucial property that determines their effectiveness and therefore needs to be determined.

The Modular Compact Rheometer (MCR), equipped with the Powder Flow Cell and the Envelope Density Setup, is a viable tool for analyzing density. Using a dry, non-toxic immersion medium offers a significant advantage in comparison to the widespread use of mercury intrusion porosimetry, while providing similar information about sample porosity in a non-destructive workflow.
