Density Measurement of Nitromethane Using DMA 35 Ex Petrol

Racing teams need a fast and safe way to verify the nitromethane–methanol ratio before each run. Portable density measurement enables accurate on-site fuel composition control, preventing engine damage and ensuring consistent performance.

In motorsport, in particular drag racing, the power output and safety of the engine depend strongly on the exact composition of the nitromethane-methanol fuel mixture. Teams must verify the fuel composition for performance consistency, safety and regulatory reasons.

Especially in top fuel categories, the fuel composition is tightly regulated. The maximum permitted nitromethane concentration is 90 % by volume, with the remaining 10 % methanol acting as a stabilizer and coolant. Exceeding the 90 % limit leads to immediate disqualification or financial penalties, so a fast on-site measurement method is essential.

Density measurement provides a simple and reliable method to verify fuel composition on-site. The DMA 35 Ex Petrol enables teams to perform these checks directly at the racetrack, even in areas with explosion risk. This report describes how to determine the concentration of nitromethane in fuel mixtures using the Anton Paar DMA 35 Ex Petrol portable density meter.
