Using the Nova Degassing Accessory to prepare carbon black samples for NSA | STSA analysis

Two commercially-available carbon black standard reference materials of different grades were evaluated for Nitrogen Surface Area (NSA) and Statistical Thickness Surface Area (STSA) after being degassed using the Nova Degassing Accessory (NDA). The resulting data indicated that the NDA performed within the reference material specifications.

Traditionally, degasification on Nova instruments has been a built-in feature (located on the left side of the instrument) with the capability of preparing up to four samples simultaneously and the option of choosing between flow or vacuum using mantles as the heating source. Demand for higher throughput and longer heating hours resulted in a new option: the Nova Degas Accessory (NDA). To verify successful degasification utilizing the NDA, this study tested two carbon black materials, SRB-9A2 and HNSA, (from the ASTM D-24 Standard Reference Carbon Black), that have certified values for Nitrogen Surface Area (NSA) and Statistical Thickness Surface Area (STSA).
