Visualizing Structural Evolution of Colloidal Suspensions using Advanced Rheo-Polarized Imaging Technique
The structural evolution of cellulose nanofibril (CNF) suspensions was visualized using the Rheo-Iris system, which was developed in collaboration between Anton Paar and Photonic Lattice.
Rheo-Iris integrates a stress-controlled rheometer with a high-speed polarization camera, enabling real-time, two-dimensional observation of birefringence and orientation under applied stress. Creep measurements revealed stress-dependent transitions in CNFs, progressing from isotropic entangled networks to vorticity-aligned rosary-like structures, and finally to flow-aligned anisotropic configurations. This rheo-optical approach provides a quantitative tool for analyzing stress-induced microstructural dynamics in complex fluids.
