Chemicals | Quality control of raw materials for epoxy resin production

The viscosity of raw materials used in epoxy resin production is controlled to determine end-product properties and their application. A DMA density meter with Lovis microviscometer is suitable for time-efficient viscosity measurements in quality control during production.

The term epoxy resins describes a large class of polymers, known for their excellent chemical resistance, mechanical properties, and resistance to moisture and environmental degradation. They are routinely used as adhesives, coatings, electrical insulators etc., in various industries.
Epoxy resins consist of base resins, hardeners and modifiers which together give the epoxy resin its final structure and properties. Knowing the properties of all raw materials is essential for creating application-specific epoxy resins.
The viscosity of the raw materials gives information about their physical differences, their processability, and handling. Additionally, the viscosity defines the properties of the end product and its final application. Therefore, viscosity measurements are an essential part of quality control of raw material producers and epoxy resin manufacturers.

The desired quality control parameter for the samples is the dynamic viscosity. Taking into consideration the corrosiveness of the samples, a Lovis microviscometer was coupled with a DMA density meter. A single syringe sample changer Xsample 340 was used for filling and cleaning.
