Liebherr Machines Bulle SA develops and produces diesel and gas engines, injection systems, hydraulic components, and splitter boxes. For more than three decades, the company has relied on Anton Paar instruments to measure oil density and liquid viscosity. Online L-Vis and L-Dens measurements help Liebherr detect deviations in real-time, save time, and support engine development with reliable data.

Reliable measurement technology for engine development

Liebherr Machines Bulle SA is part of the Liebherr Group and develops and produces diesel and gas engines, injection systems, hydraulic components, and splitter boxes.

Liebherr has used Anton Paar’s DMA 48 for more than three decades to measure the density of oil. The company also uses Anton Paar viscometers to measure the viscosity of liquids, as well as L-Vis and L-Dens systems for online measurements directly at the test bed.

Why online measurement matters

With L-Vis, Liebherr can measure viscosity directly at the test strip without taking separate samples. This allows deviations or problems with ingredients to be identified in real time, resulting in faster response, better process insight, and a direct contribution to product quality.

L-Dens supports online density measurement of gasoline used for the engine delivery system. Any change in density is detected immediately, including temperature-related changes when gasoline enters the test bed. This enables Liebherr to follow the density curve online and reduce the need for additional offline checks.

From manual checks to real-time control

Before online measurement, Liebherr used DMA 48 for offline gasoline checks. Samples were taken and measured regularly, especially when switching between summer and winter gasoline. During these periods, measurements were required more frequently until the density stabilized.

Online measurement now helps Liebherr monitor supplier gasoline quality, detect water entering the fuel tank, monitor tracers in test-bed gasoline, identify leaks, and control dosage. These capabilities save time and give the team immediate information during engine testing.

Long-term reliability and service

For Liebherr, the main advantages of Anton Paar instruments are measurement quality, ease of use, and reliability. The instruments are described as dependable and low-maintenance, with calibration remaining stable over long periods.

Anton Paar’s service is also valued. Support requests are rare, but when they occur, Liebherr receives quick assistance and practical solutions that help the team resume measurements without delay.

"Any time we need support, which is very rare, we get a quick response from Anton Paar."
