Particle Characterization by Size and Morphology – Corcelles

Formation de base

In this course, participants will learn about the theory of light scattering and the relevance of size and morphology in particle characterization. The principles of laser diffraction and image analysis will be covered, as well as understanding the pros and cons between the two techniques and advantages of choosing one over the other. In the afternoon, participants will have hands-on experience with both instruments, the Litesizer DIF (laser diffraction) and the Litesizer DIA series (dynamic image analysis). After these experiments, data interpretation and analysis will be discussed in small groups. 

Requirements:

Ideally suited for professionals active in material sciences, particle formulation and processing.

Dr. Amir Zaim, Dr. David Burnand, Dr. Viola Warter (English)

Groupe cible: Scientists who wants to learn more about the possibilities of Anton Paar’s size distribution equipment, already owns a particle size instrument or wants to deepen their knowledge about new technologies on the market.
Conditions préalables: Candidates should ideally have a basic knowledge of material characterization and experience with particle size analyzers.

Dr. Amir Zaim

Amir Zaim, born in 1983, has a background in chemistry and obtained his PhD in coordination chemistry of lanthanides from the University of Geneva in 2014. After two years of R&D experience at Solvay in France, where he worked on the waste water strategy from the recycling of permanent magnets, he decided to develop his business acumen by obtaining his MBA degree at the University of Geneva in 2019. Amir Zaim started as a product specialist for particle analysis at Anton Paar Switzerland in 2018, and since 2024 he has been the team leader of the particle characterization team in Switzerland.

Dr. David Burnand

David Burnand, born in 1985, studied chemical engineering at the HEIA-FR in Fribourg. Following his Master of Science in Chemistry, he obtained his PhD in colloidal chemistry at the Adolphe Merkle Institute in 2018 for the design and characterization of polymer-coated nanoparticles for biomedical applications. With his extensive background in nanomaterials, David has been working as an application specialist in material characterization and rheological properties at Anton Paar Switzerland since 2022.

Dr. Viola Warter

Dr. Viola Warter, born in 1982, graduated from the University of Heidelberg with a diploma in geosciences in 2010. She then moved to the Royal Holloway University of London to complete her PhD in Geochemistry/Palaeoclimatology (2011 to 2016) with a focus on LA-ICPMS trace element and isotope analysis. After completing her PhD, she worked as a laboratory manager in both geosciences and pharmacy, and returned to active research in geomicrobiology at the University of Tübingen (2017 to 2019).
