Monotonic Shear Strength (MOSS) Tests: Characterizing Roofing Asphalts

The Monotonic Shear Strength (MOSS) test was developed during Asphalt Institute Foundation (AIF) research project 22-03, Understanding and Improving the Durability of Asphalt Shingles, as a means of characterizing roofing asphalts. Using parallel-plate geometry and monotonic shear loading, the MOSS test is a rapid and convenient high-strain procedure that provides a measure of the strength and strain tolerance of asphalt binders. In 2025, the test was developed into a draft ASTM method and is currently moving toward final publication.

This webinar provides an overview of the MOSS test, including the development, refinement and applications of the procedure. Background about the importance and challenges of binder characterization outside of the linear viscoelastic (LVE) region will be provided and will serve as a backdrop for the developmental history of the MOSS test.  Discussion will center around applications and methods of analysis from MOSS data, with a look toward future development and advancement.

Wes Cooper is the Laboratory Manager and Senior Research Scientist at the Asphalt Institute. A veteran in asphalt testing, he has over 18 years of experience in asphalt science and education. Wes serves as the staff liaison for the Asphalt Institute Roofing Technical Advisory Committee. As an educator, he is an instructor in the Rheobit advanced rheology course held at the Asphalt Institute headquarters in Lexington, KY.
