An Introduction to Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) of Polymers
Dynamic mechanical analysis is a useful technique for characterizing the mechanical properties of all kinds of materials, particularly polymers or polymer-based products such as thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers, adhesives, paints and coatings, films and fibers, as well as composites.
DMA can provide quantitative and qualitative data regarding:
- Viscoelastic moduli and damping
- Material structure and morphology
- Relaxation behavior (Primary, secondary)
- Influence of fillers and fibers in polymers
- Crystallization/melting processes
- Curing behavior
Detailed information about these properties is crucial for materials development as well as for design of production processes.

Alexander Troiss is part of the International Product Competence team in the Business Area Rheometry at Anton Paar GmbH headquarters, Graz, Austria. After successful completion of the R&D project of the DMA instrument ‘MCR 702 MultiDrive’, in which he was responsible for application engineering, he is now supporting international customers in the field of dynamic mechanical analysis. He obtained his master's degree in chemical engineering, with an emphasis on pharmaceutical process engineering, from Graz University of Technology, Austria. He carried out his bachelor's and master's theses at the Research Center Pharmaceutical Engineering GmbH (RCPE) in Graz, focusing on rheology and thermal analysis of polymeric pharmaceutical formulations used in hot-melt extrusion.
