Polymers | Diffuse Reflectance FTIR of Hard Polymers with Lyza 7000 and an Abrasion Tool

ATR-FTIR can be limited by poor sample-crystal contact when measuring hard or irregularly shaped polymers. Sample preparation with an abrasion tool enables effective measurement using Lyza 7000 equipped with an EasiDiff DRIFTS cell.

FTIR spectroscopy, particularly in ATR mode, is commonly used for polymer analysis due to its ease of use and minimal sample preparation requirements.
However, ATR measurements rely on optimal contact between the sample and the crystal surface, which can pose challenges for hard, irregularly shaped or large
polymer samples.

To address this challenge, the Pike abrasion tool was used to scrape off sample of a Polycarbonate- Polymethylmethacrylate object, which was then measured with Lyza 7000 and the EasiDiff diffuse reflectance cell.
