Chemicals | Ammonium Hydroxide – A Multitalented Chemical
Ammonium hydroxide is a solution of ammonia (NH3) in water (H2O) which finds its application in many different industries. In quality control the concentration of dissolved ammonia can easily be measured with an Anton Paar refractometer within seconds.
Ammonium hydroxide is a solution of ammonia in water with different concentrations and widely used as an effective household cleaner, raw material for some disinfectants, in the food production (E527) or as a wood-darkening agent in the furniture production. It serves as nitrogen source for fertilizers in the agricultural sector and can also be found in many care products.
Ammonium hydroxide solutions are commonly available in the concentration range of 10-30 %. It is also referred to as
- Ammonia solution
- Ammonia water
- Ammoniacal/ammonia liquor
- Aqua/aqueous ammonia
- Spirits of hartshorn (old)
- Liquid ammonia
The name ammonium hydroxide is in fact slightly misleading since it suggests that NH4OH can be isolated. Nevertheless, the ammonium hydroxide concentration can easily be measured with the Abbemat refractometer series from Anton Paar.
