Polyethylene Influence of CO₂ and N₂ on the Viscosity
The viscosity of polymer melts plays a critical role in processing, with higher viscosities requiring increased energy input
The viscosity of polymer melts during processing, such as melt extrusion, is a critical parameter as high viscosity leads to increased energy consumption. Reducing viscosity without introducing solvents that must be removed is therefore highly desirable.
The use of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO₂) offers an effective solution, enabling viscosity to be reduced without altering polymer properties. In addition, scCO₂ can facilitate the formation of foamed materials [1]. As a result, accurate determination of the viscosity of polymer melts under elevated pressure is of significant technical importance.
