General | How to create a customer function on an Abbemat refractometer

Abbemat refractometers from Anton Paar can measure the concentration of binary solutions of e.g. organic and inorganic compounds in a solvent. This guide gives you step-by-step instructions for preparing a concentration scale to directly display the required sample concentration.

When dissolving a sample in a suitable solvent or mixing two liquid components with each other the refractive index of the final solution will depend on the concentration of each component in this solution. Thus, the conversion of the measured refractive index into a unit of concentration, e.g. g/100 g, g/100 mL or g/L, is a very common application for refractometers. Correlations between refractive index and e.g. freezing temperature, sound velocity, density or stoichiometric ratio are also possible.
