Eutectic Gallium Indium Alloy (eGaIn) as a Non-Toxic Replacement for Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry

Eutectic gallium indium alloy (eGaIn) is introduced as a non-toxic, sustainable replacement in mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP).

In this report, we introduce the first viable alternative to mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP): eGaIn intrusion porosimetry. This method uses a non-toxic eutectic gallium indium alloy (eGaIn) to reproduce the analytical capabilities of MIP, while ensuring a safe operating environment compatible with the needs of modern laboratories. Results from measuring a certified reference material and two additional samples with mercury and eGaIn, reveal comparable pore-size distributions and total intruded volumes. These findings demonstrate a practical and sustainable alternative to mercury for intrusion porosimetry.
