Determining filling volumes based on density measurement

Filling volumes can be determined from sample weight and apparent density when direct volume measurement is impractical. This fast and easy method using modern density meters ensures accurate, reproducible results and supports compliance with labelling and quality requirements for products sold by volume.

In many industries such as cosmetics, petroleum, and chemicals, products are filled, priced, or even taxed by their volume. When measuring volume directly is difficult, it is more practical to determine the product’s weight and calculate the filling volume using its density. This approach is reliable, straightforward, and widely used.

The filling volume (V) can be calculated from the sample weight (W) and the apparent density (ρapp):
 V = W / ρapp
