DMA Measuring Systems

For dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), Anton Paar offers measuring systems with temperature sensors to ensure the highest measurement reproducibility. QuickConnect coupling allows one-handed connection without the use of a screwing mechanism, and the Toolmaster functionality enables automatic tool configuration without any manual settings in the software. In combination with a touch-control feature to position the fixtures with the touch of a finger, the DMA measuring systems guarantee convenient sample handling.

Key features

Solid rectangular or circular fixtures for one EC drive in action (SRF and SCF)

DMA in torsion can be performed with only the upper EC drive of the MCR. The load is separated from the forces required to clamp the sample, ensuring higher accuracy and minimizing measurement artifacts. In combination with suitable convection temperature devices, this setup guarantees reliable characterization of viscoelastic properties of films, and rectangular or circular bars as a function of amplitude, frequency, temperature, relative humidity, or time.

Solid rectangular or circular fixtures for two EC drives in action (SRF/TD and SCF/TD)

The MCR 703 MultiDrive enables DMA measurements in torsion using both EC drives. Measurements in separate motor transducer mode and counter-oscillation mode can therefore be performed, in addition to the full range of modes available using a single drive. This enables the selection of the best possible measurement setup for each sample, providing precise measurement data over the complete frequency range.

Solid rectangular or circular fixtures for a linear drive or an EC drive in action

These fixtures enable DMA in tension and torsion with MCR configurations using a linear drive. This can be used to determine the complex Young’s modulus |E*| and complex shear modulus |G*| of films, fibers, and thin solids. The MCR 703 MultiDrive additionally enables axial-torsional DMA to determine the Poisson’s ratio of isotropic materials or direction-dependent information for anisotropic materials. The fixtures can also be used to measure the thermal expansion of solid bars.

Three-point-bending geometries for a linear drive in action (TPB/LD)

These measuring systems are suitable for DMA in bending mode with MCR configurations using a linear drive. The sample is supported at both ends by a movable sample support, while a static bending tool is placed at the midpoint of the sample. As no additional clamping of the sample is necessary, measurement errors from restraints are minimized. This makes the systems suitable for accurate characterization of stiff materials, such as composites and thermoplastics below their Tg, thermosets, metals, and ceramics.

Cantilevers for a linear drive in action (CTL/LD)

Cantilevers are used for DMA in bending mode with MCR configurations using a linear drive. In this system, the sample is clamped using the movable sample support and the static bending tool. This makes the measuring systems suitable not only for materials with low stiffness, but also for materials that undergo dramatic changes in dynamic mechanical properties that would otherwise exhibit strong bowing under load.

Compression systems for a linear drive in action (PP/TD)

For DMA in compression, plate-plate measuring systems can be combined with MCR configurations using a linear drive. These systems are suitable for the DMA of foams, elastomers, food systems, and gels. As the materials do not have to be clamped, they offer flexibility with respect to sample dimensions. The same systems can also be used for rheological characterization with the rotational drive of the MCR and for measuring the thermal expansion.
