How to measure the concentration of deuterium oxide

Deuterium oxide is a liquid solvent in which the hydrogen atoms of a water molecule are replaced by the heavier isotope deuterium. Density meters are suitable for determining the concentration of D2O, which is used as a cooling liquid in nuclear reactors, in medicinal diagnostics, research, and NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) analyses.

Anton Paar’s 6-digit density meter offers unparalleled precision for the concentration values of D2O and deuterium-depleted water.

The specific gravity of D2O solutions, determined in the customer’s lab in various concentrations using a digital density meter, was shown to be linear. It can be stated that a digital density meter with sufficient accuracy can replace the traditional pycnometer method and improve accuracy.

Digital density meters are advantageous because only small sample volumes of the expensive substance are required.
