Polyethylene Influence of CO₂ and N₂ on the Viscosity

The viscosity of polymer melts plays a critical role in processing, with higher viscosities requiring increased energy input

The viscosity of polymer melts during processing, such as melt extrusion, is a critical parameter as high viscosity leads to increased energy consumption. Reducing viscosity without introducing solvents that must be removed is therefore highly desirable.

The use of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO) offers an effective solution, enabling viscosity to be reduced without altering polymer properties. In addition, scCO can facilitate the formation of foamed materials [1]. As a result, accurate determination of the viscosity of polymer melts under elevated pressure is of significant technical importance.
