Cosmetics, Pharma | Low Volume Applications: Rotational Viscosity Testing of Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics with Cone-Plate Geometries

Especially in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry the sample volume for quality control tests often should be as low as possible to save expensive formulations. The ViscoQC with PTD 100 Cone-Plate measuring systems allows reduction of sample volume down to 0.5 mL.

This application report shows how pharmaceutical and cosmetic samples can be measured using the rotational viscometer ViscoQC 100/300 in combination with the PTD 100 Cone-Plate accessory and cone-plate (CPxx) measuring systems. The configuration gives the customer the chance to reduce the required sample volume for a viscosity measurement down to 0.5 mL to 2 mL. In contrast, for a typical rotational viscosity test with standard spindles, a sample volume of 500 mL is required. However, in many cases formulations are only produced in small quantities and include expensive ingredients. Moreover, cone-plate measuring systems provide absolute viscosity determinations for sophisticated and reliable measurements.

Experiment:

Two different samples have been viscosity-tested with two different configurations. The oral solution contains the active ingredient Simeticone, which is used to reduce bloating or pain caused by excessive gas in the gastrointestinal tract. The gel is used for muscle and joint pain and is directly applied on the affected skin areas.
