Development and Application of Multilayer X-Ray Optics

Multilayer-based X-ray optics have the potential to significantly expand the performance of many X-ray systems due to their versatility and adaptability to basically all common X-ray sources. In addition to the flexibility regarding working photon energy and accepted bandwidth, multilayers also permit the fabrication of beam-shaping, curved mirrors. Thus, focusing or collimating (parallel beam) X-ray optics can be designed for techniques such as XRD, SAXS, XRR, µ-XRF and many more.

AXO DRESDEN has been designing and manufacturing serial OEM and custom-made multilayer X-ray optics for almost two decades now. In this webinar, we will explain the working principles of multilayers and present some examples from industry, research laboratories as well as synchrotron sources. You will have the chance to ask questions about the technique and its feasibility also in new application fields.

The webinar content will be:

  • Working principle of multilayer mirrors
  • Multilayer designs for beam shaping optics
  • In-house design and fabrication of optics
  • Examples from industry and research, small and large laboratories

Target group:

  • Beginners to experts in X-ray optics and X-ray analysis
  • Anyone working with commercial or customized XRD and other X-ray based instruments
  • Anyone interested in tailor-made solutions for measurement problems and instrument upgrades

Dr. Markus Krämer obtained his PhD in Physics from the University of Dortmund for his work about Synchrotron Radiation Induced X-ray Standing Waves and X-ray Reflectivity Measurements in Material Analysis. He spent one year as a Post-Doc at Osaka Electro-Communication University (OECU) in Neyagawa, Osaka, Japan, in the development of curved X‑ray optics. In 2008, he joined AXO DRESDEN GmbH, now a subsidiary of Anton Paar, as project manager for optics design and simulation and now works in the key account management to provide customers with optimized, tailor-made multilayer solutions.
