Colombia’s National Institute of Metrology (INM) in Bogotá provides metrological services and supports industry, academia, and service laboratories with training and technical assistance. In its inorganic chemistry laboratory, INM uses Anton Paar’s Multiwave 5000 for sample preparation of complex matrices such as cosmetics and plastics, helping ensure measurements meet international standards.

Ensuring reliable measurements in Colombia

The INM provides metrological services and coordinates scientific metrology activities in Colombia. A key part of its work takes place in the sample preparation area of its inorganic chemistry laboratory, led by Carlos España. The laboratory verifies reference materials and helps ensure that measurement results used for export-oriented products meet international standards.

Expanding capabilities for complex matrices

The INM had already used Anton Paar’s Multiwave PRO for several years, including for measurements of cadmium in cocoa and mercury in fish flour. When collaborating with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the institute needed to expand its capabilities across the chemical value chain, including materials used in cosmetics and plastics.

Because these matrices are more complex and the INM had already had a positive experience with Multiwave PRO, the institute added Anton Paar’s Multiwave 5000 to its portfolio.

More samples processed per day

With Multiwave 5000, the INM can perform microwave digestion on a wide range of samples, regardless of their complexity or volume. The system also supports acid leaching, microwave solvent extraction, evaporation, microwave-induced oxygen combustion, sample drying, and synthesis.

The new instrument enabled the INM to double the number of samples processed each day, helping more products reach export markets while ensuring compliance with relevant international standards and regulations.

Robust instruments and strong support

The INM has used Anton Paar instruments for almost a decade. According to Carlos España, Anton Paar instruments are worth the investment because of their robust performance and reliability in the test environment.

The institute also values Anton Paar’s customer-friendly approach, sales team, service, and support. From initial contact through daily use, the INM describes working with Anton Paar as straightforward and reliable.

"Starting with our interactions with the sales team, working with Anton Paar has always been easy. I’d give it a 10 out of 10."
