Intrinsic viscosity and molar mass determination are important and easy methods for quality control of biopolymers such as pectin, xanthan gum, hyaluronic acid or chitosan. Lovis combines precise and fast viscosity measurements for subsequent molar mass calculations.
According to IUPAC, biopolymers are substances that are composed of one type of biomacromolecules, i.e., macromolecules that are formed by living organisms. This definition includes proteins, nucleic acids, and polysaccharides. In comparison to synthetic polymers, biopolymers offer advantages like well-defined and more complex structures, (bio)degradability, non-toxicity, and renewability.
Quality control of (bio)polymers is necessary to ensure good properties for processing and application. The molar mass of a polymer is important as it affects the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the product. Viscosity determination in dilute solution is a simple and fast method to determine the molar mass of a polymer.
