Characterizing Dynamic Mechanical Properties of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Composites

Using an Anton Paar Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer to characterize the thermal properties of carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRP).

Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) is a basic analytical tool for investigation of thermo-mechanical behavior of thermosets and thermoset-based composite materials.

This application report shows how thermo-mechanical properties of a bidirectional carbon fiber/epoxy matrix composite can be characterized using an Anton Paar Modular Compact Rheometer (MCR) with an additional lower linear drive.

Because of their outstanding ratio of strength to weight, fiber-reinforced composites are gaining importance and acceptance in many industries, such as aerospace and automotive industry. Modern commercial aircrafts like the Boeing 787, are made of more than 50 % composites by weight.

At glass transition, thermosets transform from a rigid, glassy material, to a soft, rubbery state. This transformation leads to changes in material properties, some of which are thermal expansivity, heat capacity and elastic modulus.
