Principles of Physisorption and Chemisorption with Martin Thomas

This seminar, organized by Anton Paar Spain, will explain the basics of vacuum-volumetric physisorption, a technique used to measure surface area and pore size. We will discuss how to prepare samples properly and compare the benefits of using different gases for analysis, such as nitrogen, krypton, argon, and carbon dioxide. The seminar will also cover mathematical models used to calculate pore size, focusing on Density Functional Theory (DFT) and comparing it to traditional models like BJH.

Additionally, we will discuss how to study catalytically active surfaces by chemisorption of reactive gases. This will include methods such as static volumetric isotherms and dynamic pulse titration, as well as temperature-programmed techniques (TPR, TPO, and TPD). Best practices and key experimental considerations will also be shared.

Dr. Martin A. Thomas PhD

Dr. Martin Thomas has 40 years of industrial experience in the characterization of porous materials and powders. He graduated from the University of Birmingham (UK) with a master’s degree in analytical chemistry and PhD in physical/inorganic chemistry (Ni(OH)2 electrode), and joined Quantachrome Instruments (now Anton Paar QuantaTec) in 1991. He is named on ten patents relating to porous materials and their characterization, and is co-author of “Characterization of Porous Solids and Powders: Surface Area, Pore Size and Density” published by Springer. He has held the position of Global Lead Scientist for Anton Paar QuantaTec’s Surface and Pores product line since 2019.
