Introduction to High Temperature Viscosimetry and Rheometry

The Furnace Rheometer Systems (FRS) are ideal for viscosity and visco-elasticity measurements up to 1730 °C sample temperature. They combine a high-precision Modular Compact Rheometer (MCR) rheometer head, which features the well-established EC motor technology as well as an air bearing, with a lab furnace in a safety cage. The wide torque range enables an unsurpassed viscosity range for measurements above 600 °C, which makes it the perfect device for all melts, starting from low viscous metal melts to the high viscous glass melts. This report presents the FRS and its accessories and shows measurement examples for slags, metal and glass melts.

Many of the solid materials for everyday use are processed in a molten state. While for most polymers, the melting process takes place at temperatures of few hundred degrees Celsius, for other materials such as metals, glasses, ceramics, lava or other slags, temperatures above 1000 °C are required. The viscosity of those kinds of materials in a molten state is an important parameter to optimize material processing and to ensure a high quality of the final products. Such measurements can be performed by using the Furnace Rheometer Systems (FRS) which combine a rheometer and a lab furnace for absolute viscosity measurements of melts at temperatures up to 1730 °C. Typical samples include metal melts, glass melts, rock melts, slags and molten salts.
