Indentation Techniques in Materials Research and Quality Control

1st Collaborative Academia-Industry Workshop Between University of Houston and Anton Paar

Indentation measurements have been used in academia and industry since the early 1990s yet many engineers and materials scientists have a knowledge gap preventing them from fully embracing indentation as the problem solving technique it is.

This workshop is designed to provide attendees with a sound understanding of the principles behind indentation techniques and the applications thereof. Theory, applications, and hands-on measurements will be combined to provide a highly productive learning experience.

Those in need of an introduction or refresher on indentation measurements including engineers, materials scientists, chemists, professors, post docs, and graduate students will find this applied course beneficial.

Pavel Sedmak, PhD.

Pavel Sedmak is Product Manager at Anton Paar TriTec. He obtained his PhD in materials science at the Czech Technical University in Prague (Czech Republic). He continued as a post-doc at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in France, working on the ID11 materials science beamline. He joined Anton Paar TriTec in 2020, and since then has gained deep knowledge in instrumented indentation, scratch testing, and tribology. His main tasks are laboratory measurement for customers and generating analytical and application reports using Anton Paar products, for scientific and industrial projects.

Konkad Krakowiak

Konrad J. Krakowiak, Ph.D. holds an Assistant Professor position, in the Civil and environmental Engineering Department (CEE) and he is a director of the SERC Civil and Environmental Engineering Facility at University of Houston (UH). He is also a Research Affiliate at Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Before joining UH, he was appointed as a Research Scientist, and Postdoctoral Associate, in the Concrete Sustainability Hub (CSHub@MIT) at MIT, an interdisciplinary team of researchers from several departments across MIT working on concrete science and engineering.
