Mechanical surface characterization of biomedical materials: From cartilage to knee implants

In engineering, efforts to imitate what nature has ingeniously invented face many material challenges. And although bioengineers have been very successful, we still have to ensure that new implants and replacements last as long as possible. That's why we need to characterize their biological and mechanical properties. In this webinar, we will focus on mechanical characterization of the surfaces of various biomedical materials and implants. In the first part of the webinar, Jiri Nohava, PhD, will show how surface mechanical testing can be used for tissue engineering, understanding the anisotropy of bone and the tribology of joint implants. In the second part, Dr. Joachim Döring will present the results of a retrieval study on coated knee implants, by identifying types of damage – critical factors influencing the coating durability – and their correlation to the clinical performance.

Part I: Introduction to surface mechanical testing for biomedical materials (Jiří Nohava, PhD)

Trainer part I: Jiří Nohava, PhD

Jiri Nohava is the Head of Product Competence & Lead Application Scientist of the Mechanical Surface Characterization unit at Anton Paar. He obtained his PhD in materials science at the Czech Technical University in Prague. He joined Anton Paar in 2007 and has become a specialist in instrumented indentation and tribology in various domains. His main task is development of new applications with Anton Paar instruments in scientific and industrial projects. He regularly publishes in peer-reviewed journals and participates in international conferences.

Trainer part II: Dr. Joachim Döring
Dr. Joachim Döring is Lead Engineer at the University Orthopedic Clinic of the Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg (Germany). He received his PhD at the same university in 2016 and has since become an expert in experimental orthopedics, with a specialization in joint implants.
