Powder handling is a common operation found in several industrial processes like storage, feeding, fluidization, blending, compaction etc. where powders are used as raw materials, intermediates, or final products. Oftentimes, handling and working with powders can be quite difficult and challenging owing to their change in behavior during manufacturing processes. This is especially true when process conditions change such as, for example, when a powder is fluidized during pneumatic conveying and consolidated during storage. Unexpected changes and poorly characterized properties of powders can have an enormous impact on the quality of the final product.
A number of technologies exist for powder characterization that encompasses powder sampling and analysis in a dry or wet state. Measured parameters typically include size, shape, surface area, porosity, and functionality. A good understanding of these powder parameters, along with the flowability of the powders, paves the way towards optimizing process conditions to achieve a quality final product.
We present, in this webinar, technologies and examples of powder characterization, including powder size, surface area, porosity, and powder flow. As surface area is the means by which a solid interacts with its environment, the area of the solid surface affects how it interacts and flows. Many powder properties, such as dissolution rates of pharmaceuticals, catalytic activity adsorption capacity, moisture retention, and shelf life are often correlated to the surface area which, in turn, is affected by its size and porosity. Controlling these powder properties, along with knowledge of powder flow behavior is critical to have an efficient powder manufacturing process.
This webinar will also focus on employing a rheometer to study powders in a fluidized and compacted state to analyze powder flowability. Case studies with different types powders ranging from free flowing to cohesive will also be discussed.

Dr. Vinod Radhakrishnan is a Senior Product Specialist with the Advanced Technical Center at Anton Paar USA. Dr. Radhakrishnan’s areas of expertise includes surface charge and zeta potential, particle sizing using light scattering and laser diffraction, and surface area and porosity. Dr. Radhakrishnan holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Auburn University.
Dr. Abhishek Shetty is the Lead Scientist for the Rheology division at Anton Paar USA. Dr. Shetty has extensive expertise in new product and process development, leading large commercialization teams, discovery projects, new technology evaluation and new product innovation. As Lead Scientist for Rheology at Anton Paar USA, Dr. Shetty's work includes partnering with business and collaboration partners in academia and industry to discover new testing needs. Dr. Shetty's work with teams spans across the globe to develop new advanced applications pertaining to rheology, using advanced rheometric tools. Dr. Shetty received his degrees in Chemical Engineering from National Institute of Technology Karnataka (BS) and University of Michigan (MS) (Ph.D).
