Pharma, Lubricants | Kinematic Viscosity of White Oils

Quality control of white oils requires the determination of various parameters. Kinematic viscosity is one of these important parameters for specification. Anton Paar’s SVM 1001 Simple Fill viscometer offers the perfect solution for fast, economic and precise measurements.

One of the most important raw materials used for technical as well as medicinal and pharmaceutical purposes are the so-called white oils. These highly refined hydrocarbon oils are chemically inert, extremely pure, odor- and colorless, stable, and also non-toxic. Depending on their intended purpose, a certain viscosity is required, e. g. to ensure perfect mixing with other components in the production process or for reliable lubrication of machinery in food production plants.

White oils are widely used, for example in the production of pharmaceuticals, creams, and ointments, veterinary drugs, cosmetic products, manufacturing aids, plasticizers and diluents, but also as lubricants for instruments and machinery in this field of application. Moreover, they are used as plasticizers for the production of rubber articles with food contact or for medical purposes (e. g. EPDM or butyl rubber) or as lubricants in the textile industry.

Besides the highly refined and purified medicinal white oils, also a technical white oil grade is available. A main difference is the higher content of aromatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the technical white oil grade. Typical applications include use as lubricants for bicycles, watches, or other valuable machinery.
