Application RapidOxy: Stability of Fragrance Oils

The stability of fragrance oils with different additives was tested at 140 °C in the RapidOxy and according to the EN 14112.

Alternative to Traditional Stability Test Methods

The rapid small scale tester, RapidOxy, is a fast, safe and user friendly alternative to traditional stability test methods. The instrument measures the induction period, which can be used as an indication of the oxidation and storage stability. Compared to other oxidation and storage stability test methods, the RapidOxy procedure requires only a small sample to give exact test results in a short period of time.

Quick Preparation and Easy Handling

All it takes on preparation is to fill 5 mL of the sample directly into the test chamber, tighten the screw cap and close the instrument. The test chamber is automatically charged with oxygen pressure and heated until it reaches the test temperature (e.g. 140 °C in a standard program). Now the pressure is monitored until a pressure drop of 10 % from pmax is detected.

Comparing Test Results of RapidOxy and EN 14112

The following table shows the oxidation stability of fragrance oil base and of fragrance oil with additives at test temperatures of 140 °C in the RapidOxy and at 110 °C for the EN 14112 by 20 l/h air.

Time from start until pressure drop of
10 % below pmax
Mixture 1. Test 2. Test EN 14112
Basic sample (pure) 25:60 min 24:88 min 4:96 h
+ 0.1 % Aperoxid TLA 58:23 min 58:25 min 20:47 h
+ 0.5 % Natrox RO5 64:78 min 65:91 min 28:97 h
+ 0.05 % BHT 98:70 min 97:85 min 11:56 h
11:84 h
+ 0.05 % Tinogard® TT 100:26 min 100:00 min 47:05 h

Summary

According to the RapidOxy, the additives 0.05 % Tinogard® TT and 0.05 % BHT have the biggest influence on increasing the oxidation stability.

According to the EN 14112, the additive Tinogard® TT has the biggest influence on the oxidation stability.

We found a good repeatability for all samples.
