There are different types of management trainee programs in the company. In my case the decision was made for a two-year program. In fall 2017 I completed a mandatory internship of several months at Anton Paar as part of my bachelor's degree. During this internship, I got to know the company and the company got to know me. The company decided to extend my employment. I was offered the two-year program so that I could complete my master's degree in these two years and then be assigned to a corresponding position in the company.

During the first 14 months I worked in Production and Purchasing. This division covers mechanical production, electronic production, facility services, and purchasing and logistics, among others. I got to work in all areas in order to get to know the corresponding processes and technologies. In mechanical production, high-precision mechanical parts are manufactured, mainly on CNC lathes and milling machines, and subsequently finished. In electronic production almost all the printed circuit boards that are used in our measuring instruments are manufactured. Two SMT assembly lines are available for this purpose. The Facility Services department takes care of the spatial and structural infrastructure at the Graz site. Purchasing and Logistics form the core of our supply chain within the company. All the departments mentioned have set themselves the goal of being the benchmark for similar departments at our subsidiaries and sister companies. In addition to the ongoing operational activities, I had the opportunity to carry out other projects and tasks. For example, I was responsible for preparing all investment projects in the area. For this I had to collect requirements for the investment, work out qualitative and quantitative arguments in favor of the investment, and finally summarize these in an investment calculation. Armed with these applications, the manager approached the management and obtained the appropriate permission to purchase. Another essential task was controlling. In addition to individual key business figures, this mainly comprised productivity figures in the individual areas. For example, the number of ordered items per week was reviewed in Purchasing and the workload for all workstations in production was assessed.

After this time I got the chance to continue my trainee program in the Administration division at the location in Graz. A major reason for this was that it gave me the opportunity to gain insights into other areas of the company. Administration includes technical employee protection, order processing, personnel administration, and internal services. In my new role I support the management in various areas and act as sub-project manager for different topics. In addition, last fall I contributed to the organizational handling of the personnel planning for this year, which helped me enormously in my personal development as I gained insights into the planning process at company level, which prepared me well for future tasks. I am also heavily involved in organizational management and share responsibility for ensuring that our subsidiaries and sister companies comply with various Anton Paar Group standards.

In addition to specialist knowledge of production, supply chain, and administration, project management skills are required for this job and an inter-divisional mindset is essential. Gaining insights into all areas of the company helped me gain an overall entrepreneurial understanding. In addition, internal training courses and external seminars allow me to exchange professional information with national and international colleagues and build a network within the company. Through these activities and the experience I have gained, the trainee program prepares me for a challenging position in an international company.
