Next Frontiers in the Dynamic Mechanical Analysis of Viscoelastic Materials

Characterization of viscoelastic materials, such as polymers, composites and biomaterials, is a complex process due to the temperature and strain rate dependence of their properties. The present talk will discuss the possibility of extracting elastic constants such as Poisson ratio from the viscoelastic properties, reducing the experimental campaign by applying sampling and machine learning methods, and trends in measured properties of materials.

Typically, the methods used to calculate Poisson ratio can be classified in direct methods which directly measure the change of the dimensions of the specimen and indirect methods from which the measurement of two moduli like shear modulus and Young’s modulus. The contribution highlights a novel torsional-axial dynamic mechanical analyzer (MCR 702 MultiDrive) which can use a linear and a rotational measuring drive in one instrument and which enables the determination of complex Young’s modulus |E*| as well as the complex shear modulus |G*| with a single sample in a continuous measurement run.

The novel capabilities provided by the MultiDrive device also include integration of a camera for strain measurement using digital image correlation (DIC). These capabilities allow measurement of Poisson’s ratio from both direct and indirect methods as a function of temperature and frequency and generate accurate results on elastic constants of the material. These new capabilities will help in accelerating the materials design process for many applications, which is becoming increasingly complex due to the stringent requirements on mechanical properties.
