High Pressure Digestion of Crude Oil for the Determination of Ni and V

HPA-S represents the ultimate performance in wet chemical high pressure digestion sample preparation in demanding cases. Hermetically sealed reaction vessels, temperatures up to 320 °C and pressures up to 130 bar guarantee quick and complete mineralization - free of systematic errors.

Nickel and Vanadium are natural constituents of crude oil. These elements are oil soluble metals which are present as porphyrins. They come from the primordial materials that became petroleum, are very large molecules and as such they have very high boiling points. Therefore they do not distil during refining and cannot be removed economically from fuel. When these elements are combusted, they form various oxides which deposit on the cooler surface forming sticky deposits and causing corrosions. Additionally these elements can poison catalysts, which are used in the refining process. For these reasons the determination of vanadium and nickel is of great importance for oil refinery industries.

There are several methods for determination of these trace elements such as direct determination by spectroscopic methods after dilution with organic solvents, determination of the elements in stable emulsion systems and the use of conventional digestion methods such as oxygen combustion. But all these methods have inherent problems.

In order to avoid matrix problems, wet digestion methods are a suitable way for sample preparation for the analysis of trace elements in oil products. There is already an existing ASTM method (C 1234-98), using the advantages of HPA-S (high pressure, high temperature, closed vessels, clean vessel materials) for digestion of crude oil. For this work HPA-S was used to reach clear solutions by profiting from the advantages of this system.
