Application RapidOxy: Oxidation Stability of Shea Butter with Different Antioxidants
Cosmetic companies developed different formulas for shea butter products. The shea butter products were tested at different temperatures with the RapidOxy to see if there are differences in the oxidation stability.
Alternative to Traditional Stability Test Methods
The rapid small scale oxidation tester, RapidOxy, is a fast, safe and user-friendly alternative to traditional stability test methods. The instrument measures the induction period, which can be used as an indication of the oxidation and storage stability. Compared to other oxidation and storage stability test methods, the RapidOxy procedure requires only a small sample quantity to give exact test results in a short period of time.
Two shea butter samples with different antioxidants were tested with a user-defined program using 5 g of sample in a glass dish at test temperatures of 120 °C and 140 °C. A filling pressure of 700 kPa was used. The test was finished after a pressure drop of 10 % below maximum pressure occurred.

Test progress on the display of the RapidOxy
Two shea butter samples were tested in the RapidOxy at 120 °C and 140 °C. In this way distinct results were achieved and it has been shown that the oxidation stability of shea butter can be determined with the RapidOxy reliably.
The results meet the customer’s expectations.
According to Arrhenius the induction period halves when the temperature is increased by 10 °C. This temperature dependence can be observed among the results measured at 120 °C and 140 °C.
