Digital workshop: Introduction to materials surface characterization
You are new to the field of materials surface characterization and are enthusiastic to learn about different measurement techniques? This introductory workshop will focus on instrumented indentation, scratch, and tribology techniques for mechanical characterization of surfaces, Calotest for coating thickness measurement, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) for mechanical and electrical sample properties and chemical composition studies.
The digital workshop will include:
- Presentations covering the theory and common applications of mechanical and topographical characterization of surfaces
- Live demonstration of measurements on instruments
- Q&A sessions
Our goal is that by the time you leave the workshop you will understand the fundamentals of the methods commonly used to study mechanical properties and surface topography and you will understand the relevant applications. Furthermore, you will learn how the instruments are handled and how to run basic measurements.

Trainer: Dr. Dr. Jelena Fischer, Jiří Nohava, PhD., Xavier Guthmann, Pavel Sedmak, PhD., Mihaela Dubuisson, Evelin Frank, Maryam Bahrami, PhD.
Jelena Fischer studied Chemistry in Chicago, received her PhD from Graz University of Technology and has subsequently been a visiting scientist at the University of California at Davis. She has published scientific work in top-notch journals such as Science and is the co-inventor of two patented inventions. Her second PhD is in Engineering Management, which has been the major focus of her work over the past 15 years. She joined Anton Paar in 2012 and is the Product Manager for Tosca Series AFM.
Jiri Nohava is the Head of Product Competence & Lead Application Scientist of the Mechanical Surface Characterization unit at Anton Paar. He obtained his PhD in materials science at the Czech Technical University in Prague. He joined Anton Paar in 2007 and has become a specialist in instrumented indentation and tribology in various domains. His main task is development of new applications with Anton Paar instruments in scientific and industrial projects. He regularly publishes in peer-reviewed journals and participates in international conferences.
Xavier Guthmann has been an Application Engineer at Anton Paar TriTec since February 2019. He studied materials science at the ENSIACET Engineering School and at Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse (France).
Pavel Sedmak is an application engineer at Anton Paar TriTec. He obtained his PhD in materials science at the Czech Technical University in Prague (Czech Republic). He continued as a post-doc at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in France, working on the ID11 materials science beamline. He joined Anton Paar TriTec in 2020, and since then has gained deep knowledge in instrumented indentation, scratch testing, and tribology. His main tasks are laboratory measurement for customers and generating analytical and application reports using Anton Paar products, for scientific and industrial projects.
Mihaela Dubuisson is in charge of the Laboratory at Anton Paar TriTec. She obtained her engineering degree in materials science at INSA in Rennes (France). She joined Anton Paar TriTec in 2014 and has since become a specialist in instrumented indentation, tribology and scratch testing. Her main task is the realization of demonstrations and applications with Anton Paar instruments in frame of scientific and industrial projects.
Evelin Frank is the Product Manager for indentation and coating thickness testers at Anton Paar Tritec. She studied Mechanical Engineering and obtained her MSc in Production Science and Management at Graz University of Technology, Austria. Prior to joining Anton Paar TriTec, Evelin worked as a Research Assistant at the Institute of Materials Science, Joining and Forming (TU Graz) and as a Mechanical Engineer in automotive industry.
Maryam Bahrami is the product manager at Anton Paar TriTec. She obtained her PhD degree in Mechanics of Material and Microsystems Engineering under a joint bi-national program between the University of Freiburg in Germany and the University of Strasbourg in France. She joined Anton Paar TriTec in 2020 and is responsible for the Tribology and Scratch products.
