100 years at the forefront
of analytical instrumentation

Here at Anton Paar, we empower scientists around the globe so game-changing science finds answers to humanity’s biggest challenges. This means outside-the-box ideas from people who don’t just defy the status quo, but reshape it.

At Anton Paar, we think the unthinkable to create the exceptional. For you. Every day anew, since 1922. And together, we measure the world.

Anton Paar is a world of wonders, a wonderworld of scientific instruments, of magically simple, crystal-clear interfaces, sleek designs, pinpoint accuracy, and stunning speed, of non-stop surprises, and wonderful extras:

An XRD with evacuated beam paths, a density meter with intelligent condition monitoring, a microwave that delivers digestion details to your smartphone.

In our world of unique, diverse analytical instruments, we promise to amaze.

History

A hundred years ago, Anton Paar started a small machine shop in Graz, Austria. Today, we’re a global company.

1922

Anton Paar establishes his machine shop in Graz (on the Heinrichstraße). He starts off with just a hand drill, a foot-operated lathe, and four machine vises. His clients are mainly local butchers and bakers.

1932

Margareta Platzer, Anton Paar's daughter, increasingly takes over the business from Anton Paar and introduces precision technologies and precision mechanics to the workshop. A year earlier, she had become the first female master machinist in Styria and began setting up the workshop’s first contacts with universities in the Graz area.

1957

In Margareta Platzer’s era, the company starts manufacturing parts for scientific devices. The first one? The famous Kratky small-angle X-ray camera, designed by Professor Otto Kratky, which the company still produces today.

1963

Ulrich Santner joins the company. He begins collaborating with external research institutes and moves the company into the realm of scientific instrument development.

1967

The company unveils the first digital density meter with oscillating U-tube technology.

1989

The company moves into several new technology areas. It builds measuring instruments for rheometry and viscometry and starts building equipment for chemical digestion using microwaves.

2002

Friedrich Santner, Ulrich Santner’s son-in-law, takes over the sole management of Anton Paar after five years of joint management. He’s largely responsible for the ensuing international success of the company.

Since 2007

The company has been growing through research and development, the in-house design of measurement solutions, and acquisitions. In 2007, Anton Paar acquires Wolfgang Kernchen GmbH (now Anton Paar OptoTec), which lets it provide optical solutions like refractometry and polarimetry. The acquisition of Petrotest GmbH (now Anton Paar ProveTec) follows in 2012, which moves the company into the area of analysis solutions for the oil industry. Anton Paar begins making surface test devices with its purchase of CSM Instruments (now Anton Paar TriTec) in 2013. By acquiring Quantachrome Instruments (now Anton Paar QuantaTec) in 2018, it can start offering particle property analysis equipment. Most recently, Anton Paar purchases AXO DRESDEN in 2019, which moves the company into the X-ray optics area.

2016 – 2021

Anton Paar has been moving into new technology areas, including particle size measurement, Raman spectroscopy, and – just recently – XRD.

Since 2020

Jakob and Dominik Santner, Friedrich Santner’s sons, join the management team. Friedrich Santner stays CEO, Jakob Santner becomes CTO, and Dominik Santner COO.

2022

Anton Paar celebrates its 100-year anniversary. 100 years after Anton Paar started his small machine shop in Graz, the company now has over 3,700 employees and 33 sales subsidiaries around the world.

Millions of pharmaceuticals – thoroughly put to the test with our instruments.

Enjoy your breakfast
Morning treat

Protein is important for your energy balance. We can break your cereals into their smallest parts to measure nitrogen molecules – which are needed to calculate the protein content.

A good start

Polarimetry can prove whether your honey is as pure as the label claims.

Taste matters

We are able to characterize fat particles in milk - they strongly influence its taste.

Hit the road

Bus, car, or even plane - no matter how you go to work or travel, you want to fill your tank appropriately. Our instruments help you to differentiate between gasoline, diesel, or jet fuel. If you need a tire on your car to withstand high strains, analyze its rubber quality. And if you don’t like scratches on your new car, you can test its paint coating for scratch resistance.

Is your olive oil really "extra virgin"? How does your ketchup stay on your fries? How much sugar is really in your soft drink – and how sparkling is it? Refractometry, rheometry, density, and CO₂ measurement supply the answers.

Together we change the world

As part of the company’s 100th anniversary celebrations, Anton Paar is donating a measuring instrument to each of five educational institutions in Colombia in 2022 to support the country’s education sector and strengthen cooperation between Anton Paar and the scientific community. Anton Paar is already involved in an education charity project in India, which has so far supported over 2,500 children through school renovations and the provision of basic supplies – with further assistance planned in the future.

Anton Paar Donates Five Instruments to Universities in Colombia, in 100th Anniversary Celebration

“We want to strengthen the research and development sector,” says CEO Friedrich Santner

The five institutions are: the National University of Colombia, Bogotá; the National University of Colombia, Medellin; the University of Antioquia; the University of Valle; and the Industrial University of Santander.

The instruments are: an MCR 72/92, a DMA 1001, a Multiwave Go, an SVM 3001, and a ViscoQC 300.

The recipients were jointly selected by Anton Paar GmbH in Graz, Austria, and Anton Paar Colombia.

Project Kalam: Helping Schools in the Villages of India

Kalam means pen in Hindi. But it is also the name of an unusual school project that Anton Paar India has overseen for the last seven years.

Funds were raised for more than 2,500 students to renovate schools in the hometowns of Anton Paar employees and provide them with basic supplies. Children in five schools now have a place they like to be in again, and where they can prepare for their future.

Coinciding with Anton Paar’s 100th anniversary, renovation of a sixth school is about to be completed.
