Rheological Investigations of Sensible Thermal Energy Storage Materials

Molten salts are one of the most common sensible heat storage media for Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants. Rheological investigations of molten salts help to characterize and select new materials for CSPs.

This report shows how Modular Compact Rheometers (MCR) from Anton Paar equipped with convection temperature devices (CTD) up to 1000 °C can help Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) applications increase their efficiency. Molten salts are one of the most common sensible heat storage media for CSP plants. The most common system configuration for CSP is a two-tank sensible heat storage system. The molten salt is pumped between a cold and a hot storage tank for charging and discharging. The heat can be delivered through an indirect system, using a heat exchanger with a thermal oil cycle or direct systems. The salt is used both as a storage medium and heat transfer fluid.
