  • 𝐀𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞 Three weeks ago, we posted an image of two of our oldest attachment manuals. This motivated us to take a deeper look into the early history of the method of non-ambient XRD and we are happy to share what we found. Luckily, all of the mentioned publications are available online and we have provided links to all of them. In May 1921 (only nine years after the discovery of X-ray diffraction by Max von Laue!) Arne Westgren and Axel E. Lindh published their groundbreaking paper “Zum Kristallbau des Eisens und Stahls“ (https://lnkd.in/dSi5Ns9h). In the paper, they introduced a Debye-Scherrer camera with a steel wire in its center, that could be heated to 1000 °C through resistive heating. In the following years, the method developed consistently, with the first high-temperature attachment on a diffractometer published by A. Wangsgard in 1942 (https://lnkd.in/daexrU4Y). These first furnace designs mostly contained resistive heated wire-wound tubes or other “wrap around” solutions, such as the “High-Temperature X-ray Diffraction Apparatus” by Alvin Van Valkenburg, Jr., and Howard F. McMurdie published in 1947 (https://lnkd.in/d7JQ3WyE). The first attachment resembling a strip heater was published by H.G. Sowman and A.I. Andrews in 1951(https://lnkd.in/dinMnFYH). Their design was further improved by J. Intrater and S. Hurwitt in 1961 (https://lnkd.in/d-ab73cg) through the introduction of a compensation for the thermal expansion of the strip. Three years later, in 1964, Anton Paar launched the HTK 10, our first non-ambient chamber. Since then, we have been constantly expanding and upgrading our portfolio. Today, we offer a wide range of high quality non-ambient XRD attachments to reliably cover all application fields of non-ambient XRD, and help our customers make the most of their measurements. • During presentations about SAXS applications, I often include a slide or two discussing its relevance to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, although I must clarify that I’m not an expert in this specific area. It’s widely recognized that SAXS plays a crucial role in understanding processes such as oligomer aggregation and protein misfolding, which are pivotal in conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. In this outstanding publication, aldo badano team at the FDA employed their SAXSpace instrument to create a mix of two model proteins, replicating the structural β-sheet characteristics. Additionally, they employed a technique called sSAXS (spectral SAXS) to assess the protein ratio and identify varying packing densities within tissue samples. https://lnkd.in/dFHmhhQf #saxs #proteins #pharmaceuticals #pharma #structuralbiology
