New Developments in Undergraduate Chemistry Lab Curriculums

Many traditional undergraduate chemistry labs require time consuming protocols, long reflux steps, waste significant amounts of water in reflux condensers and expose students and faculty to high temperature oil baths or hot plates. 

New microwave and synthesis reactor systems enable safer, easier to handle, more reliable and much faster heating solutions ideal for the academic lab environment. Additionally, microwave synthesis instrumentation enables automation, parallel reactions, internal temperature and pressure measurements and higher reaction volumes. 

Here we present an overview of the new instrumentation capabilities as well as a range of new undergraduate lab methods for organic, inorganic and nanomaterials chemistry.

Darren Wilson

Darren Wilson has been with Anton Paar USA since 2005, primarily as a product specialist for density meters, viscometers, refractometers, NIR analyzers, process instrumentation and most recently, laboratory microwaves. He has authored and co-authored several articles on various topics such as precision density measurement and biogeochemistry. He has a Bachelor of Science in Atmospheric Chemistry from Georgia Institute of Technology and a Master of Science in Biogeochemistry from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
