Flash Point Test of Water-Based Cosmetic Samples

Safe handling of process samples is an important factor when manufacturing products such as cosmetics. To be in compliance with safety and transportation regulations cosmetics companies determine the flash point of their products and ingredients.

To guarantee regulatory compliance and product safety, cosmetics manufacturers check the chemical properties of their products. The flash point is one of those properties which are important for the safe handling of a product.

The PMA 5 is an automatic closed-cup flash point tester for testing the flammability of a liquid. The flash point is the lowest temperature at which the vapors of a sample ignite upon the application of an ignition source. Anton Paar designed the Pensky-Martens flash point tester to measure flash points in the range of 40 °C to 370 °C fully complying with the standard methods for flash point determination according to ASTM D93.

Originally the flash point tester is used to determine the flash point of petroleum products such as gasoline or diesel but the flash point determination gained significance in other industries as well. One of these alternative applications is measuring water-based process samples such as lipstick and foundation pigments.

For this measurement the cosmetic pigments coming as powder from the production line are melted and then directly filled into a standard test cup which is in accordance with ASTM D93-A. This quick and easy procedure allows manufacturers of cosmetic products to prove the compliance with safety and transport regulations at little expense.
